- Innovate UK / Transforming Construction
My nine years of experience at Innovate UK / UKRI include work across national innovation programmes. Within Transforming Construction, I established the £72m Construction Innovation Hub and subsequently managed the £38m collaborative R&D portfolio.
01
The context
Transforming Construction brought a national innovation ambition into a programme of activity across the construction sector. My work covered two distinct responsibilities: establishing the Construction Innovation Hub and subsequently managing the collaborative research and development portfolio.
02
Establishing the Hub
I established the £72m Construction Innovation Hub. This was programme implementation: taking responsibility for putting a major part of the initiative into place.
03
Managing the R&D portfolio
I subsequently managed the £38m collaborative R&D portfolio. My contribution was at programme and portfolio level, supporting the delivery of collaborative innovation activity.
The research and development itself was carried out by the participating project teams. The £72m and £38m figures describe the funding associated with the Hub and portfolio respectively.
04
The perspective it brings
This experience adds a programme delivery perspective to my founder and commercial background: understanding how ambitious innovation initiatives are put into practice, and how the work of multiple organisations connects to a wider purpose.
Alongside Transforming Construction, my innovation experience also includes Assured 5G.
Innovation needs both a clear ambition and the practical structures to carry it through.
